I begin, In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
My Name is Shua and I am an interfaith and intercultural practitioner- my brief bio is on the climate crew website. You can also visit lightupwithShua.com and find out more about my podcast on Conscious Living and Conscious Parenting.
Let us Begin:
About the pandemic in Islamic tradition:
For the pandemics , Prophet Muhammad had taught us,
Messenger of Allah say, “When you hear that [a plague] is in a land, do not go to it and if it occurs in a land that you are already in, then do not leave it, fleeing from it.’”
Islam’s view on nature is rooted in multiple theocentric positions, best demonstrated by the Qur’anic verse, “There is no God but He, the Creator of all things” (Qur’an 6:102), stipulating that there is a link between creation and the Creator.
Water
The mention of water appears throughout the Qur’an and is viewed as a vital part of Allah’s creation. The Qur’an mentions, “We made from water every living thing” (Qur’an 21:30) and this sentiment is repeated in 24:45 and 25:54. Water is also emphasized as an important aspect of existence and we are told to ponder upon its use:
Have you seen the water which you drink? Was it you who sent it down from the rain cloud, or did We send it? Were it Our will, We could have made it bitter; why then do you not give thanks? (Qur’an 56: 68–70)
Second: How is man to act towards the environment?
God/Allah created Human beings as Allah’s/God’s vicegerent (khalīfa) on earth, making the earth a dwelling place for us, and ensured that our needs could be pro- vided by the earth. We have the right to use the earth, the animals, and the minerals to help our temporary(Muslims believe that the eternal life is after death) stay on earth. However, with this right comes the responsibility of manifesting the qualities of the Creator, which have been place in our primordial nature (FITRA) and those primary ones to begin are MERCY and JUSTICE.
Third: The human corruption which is connected to the environmental corruption
The Holy Qur’an sets out complete spiritual and moral guidelines for us, the human beings. GOD/Allah has told to walk humbly (Luqmān, 31:19); not to be wasteful or extravagant; not to disrupt the balance that exists in nature and not to change the creation of God.
So To live in such a manner throws creation out of balance, and this can only have serious repercussions in the world we live.
And so there is hope. I want you all to be hopeful and keep that in mind that you all are the hope.
- Human purification can help address the environmental crisis.
- The root causes are not only the dominating materialistic attitudes, which seems to be directly responsible to the crisis but corruption of HUMAN MORALS in general.
- Example: God says in the Holy Qur’an:
- Corruption has appeared on earth and at sea because of what the hands of men have wrought; in order that God may make them taste the consequences of their actions; so that they might return [that is: so that they might return to God] (Al-Rum, 30:41)
What I want you to take away from our time together:
Regardless of your faith, ask yourself: have I improved my life and the lives of those around me?
